Growing Supply Leaves Physical Copper Quoted at RMB 0-100/mt Discounts (Sept. 25, 2014)

SHANGHAI, Sept. 25 (SMM) – Physical copper in Shanghai was quoted Thursday at a RMB 0-100/mt discount to the SHFE 1410 copper contract. Traded prices were RMB 48,400-48,640/mt for standard-quality copper and RMB 48,430-48,750/mt for high-quality copper.
As SHFE copper fell back on Thursday, cargo holders and traders rushed to move goods to generate cash. This, combined with prevailing caution among market participants, left physical copper quoted at a discount across the board. As a result, some middlemen went bargain-hunting, while downstream producers slightly ramped up purchases at low prices. Trading activity, however, didn’t improve markedly on Thursday, with no active raw material stock-building reported ahead of the National Day holiday.

A steep fall in the copper prices was seen which made the fall by 0.30% a kg should be a ‘watch out’ call for copper future traders. Consequently, metal was trading at414.50 per kg in futures trade. This fall was post overseas developments which led to the stronger position of copper.
Subsequent to the above, copper due for delivery in November was down by 1 Rupee as per the last records at Multi Commodity Exchange. In the experts’ and analysts’ opinion, low demand for the metal in domestic market as well as profits booked by the speculators equally contributed to the fall in copper futures.
But the fall in prices kept considerably under check as a result of the boost in base metal demand overseas. This is especially significant because of the base metal sales figures in US which are notably highest in last six years!
